Hip Replacement: What to Expect Before and After Surgery
A patient's guide to total hip replacement — preparation, procedure, recovery, and long-term outcomes.
Total hip replacement is one of the most reliable and successful surgical procedures in medicine. It is the definitive treatment for end-stage hip osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, and certain hip fractures.
Before surgery, you will undergo a detailed evaluation including X-rays, blood tests, and an anaesthesia review. Dr. Satish Reddy uses digital templating to plan the exact implant size and positioning for your anatomy.
The procedure takes approximately 1.5 hours. The damaged femoral head is replaced with a metal stem and ball, and the acetabulum (socket) is fitted with a cup. Most patients are walking on the same day as surgery.
Recovery milestones: Day 1 — walking with a frame; Week 2 — walking independently indoors; Week 6 — return to driving and light activities; 3 months — full recovery for most patients.
With modern implants and surgical techniques, hip replacement provides excellent pain relief and restored mobility for 20+ years. Dr. Satish Reddy has performed thousands of successful hip replacements at Lux Hospitals.
